Summary: Majoring in English
The undergraduate major in English at CSI requires 44 credits of coursework to complete. English majors choose one of four concentrations: Literature, Writing, Dramatic Literature, or Linguistics. All English majors take three courses in common: (ENL 290 Introduction to the Study of Literature, ENL 300 British and American Literary Traditions, and ENL 310 World Literature in Contexts); the remaining seven courses vary according to the concentration chosen. For further details, please see the program requirements for the specific concentrations:
English majors who are interested in careers in education may also follow the Adolescence Education Sequence, which can be combined with any of the four concentrations. The sequence includes ENL 323: Coming of Age Narratives, one of two linguistics courses (LING 201 or LING 301 ), and a two-year series of courses in the Education Department. More information is found here.
For advisement or for general information about our programs, please contact Prof. Lara Saguisag or any of our English Department Faculty.
Summary: Minoring in English
There are multiple ways of minoring in English at CSI. Students may minor in one of three different areas (similar to concentrations) by completing courses in that area. Our current areas include the following (for more detailed information on requirements, please see the page corresponding to the appropriate concentration/area):
Independent Study in English
In order to take an Independent Study course, students must have completed a minimum of 24 credits in the major with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students may take no more than 8 credits of Independent Studies in the major. Applications for Independent Studies must be completed and submitted to the department chair by 5:00 pm on Friday at the end of the first full week of the semester in which the student is to complete the study. No Independent Studies may be offered during the winter and summer sessions.
